VOLCANIC LAGACY

Three day Labor Day Weekend....with my wife being out of town I was excited to get opportunity for a good camping ride. |
![]() |
Packed all my gear on Saturday morning and headed down East on Hwy 4. |
![]() |
Being a 3 day weekend the mountains were packed with people ...every pool of water along the road were swarming with campers...but I still managed to find a quiet place and take some photos. |
![]() |
Interesting looking rocks along the road.... |
![]() |
Good weather, empty twisted road...what can be better... |
![]() |
On East side of Sierras I switched to Hwy 89 North and next thing you know I was near Lake Tahoe... |
![]() |
Took East shore of lake as it is less developed and crowded.. |
![]() |
Back on Hwy 89 and heading North.. |
![]() |
By the end of the day I almost reached Lassen National Forest...and claimed last campsite.. Due to the headache I made some tea , got some aspirin and hit a bed... |
![]() |
I slept really good and woke up fresh as a pickle ...packed my gear and was on the road with a sunrise.. |
![]() |
It was cold morning , so I was really happy to stumble on this resort in Child's Meadow. They had the sign up for fresh and hot coffee... |
![]() |
And good home made breakfast... |
![]() |
By the time I reached Lassen Volcanic NP...the sun was up ... It was going to be another beautiful day....! |
![]() |
First thing checked on Sulphur Works ....every year or to be more correct - every time, I visit this place there are some changes in the landscape ... |
![]() |
This time no different...one of the craters collapsed and bubbling mud pool was right next to the road... |
![]() |
The rumbling noise coming from underground sounded powerful this silent morning....It was kind of spooky to just stand there, next to this large bubbling hole in the ground and feel ground vibrating under your feet... |
![]() |
Some other steaming holes around..source of the rotten egg smell... |
![]() |
The bubbling mud pool looked similar to this little crater several years ago... |
![]() |
Everywhere you look there were steam coming out of the ground....and it was a beautiful site to see the steam rising in the beautiful and still morning background... |
![]() |
One of the parks lakes along the road... |
![]() |
Stopped in Bumpass Hell to check out some rocks that were polished by retreating glaciers some million years ago... |
![]() |
And decided to take a little hike and check out more steaming geysers.. |
![]() |
The trail was easy and offered some beautiful views... |
![]() |
More rock along the trail that was polished by glaciers.. |
![]() |
And more interesting looking rocks... |
![]() |
Lassen Volcanic NP to me looks like well groomed and planed park ...every direction you look it's beautiful... |
![]() |
Each hill or mountain is a different collor...some are dark, some white...some red or yellow... |
![]() |
Wild flowers along the trail.. |
![]() |
Here is another hill and this one is brown/red... |
![]() |
Reached the destination Bumpass Hell... found a few tourists here.. |
![]() |
The site was bubbling, rumbling, steaming and boiling... |
![]() |
Boiling water was coming out from large or small cracks and holes in the ground... here are some small.. |
![]() |
... some larger pools... |
![]() |
...and some really large boiling water ponds... |
![]() |
This catwalk makes the access to some gnarly stuff easy and safe....or should I say safer.. |
![]() |
Because being in the bottom of large bubbling and steaming valley is not really the safest place... |
![]() |
I continued riding through the park on Hwy 89 then merged on Hwy 44 and headed East... |
![]() |
Stopping here and there ...taking more pictures... |
![]() |
I headed South on the East side of Sierras and settled for the night near Sonora pass on hwy 120.... |
![]() |
Met a couple from Sonora that spend a day fishing in nearby lakes and pulled 22" trout.. so we had some fresh trout with a beans and couple cold beers for a dinner...what a good way to finish the day.. |
![]() |
I spent couple of hours sitting by the fire and gazing at the stars...then hit a bunk.... |
![]() |
Next morning I headed South again...I had a plan to visit Devils Post Pile... |
![]() |
Couple miles from the National Monument the road was closed...The only way you can see this place now is going back to Mammoth Pools and taking a bus...! I was not feeling like spending couple of hours with a bus full of people and then rushing around with a crowd to see this place...so I turned around and headed home... |
![]() |
Got home around 4pm and washed down road dust with a cold bottle of beer ...another good ride bagged this year... |
